Asia's newest all-girl team - Xtreme Estrogen.
While all-girl teams are not new to Asian paintall with the likes of Tornado Angels leading the way back in 2006, they are a rarity since most of these teams fade away into obscurity after one season. PaintballNews.Asia sits down with the Captain Shahirah Alqadri of Xtreme Estrogen, Singapore's newest all-girl tournament team to see what makes them tick.
Paintball is becoming a popular sport amongst girls but not many form competitive tournament teams. What motivated all of you to form a team?
We started playing recreationally with family and friends. After hearing stories and seeing Khairul, our manager, play competitive paintball, the itch of wanting to give it try starting biting each one of us. With the encouragement of Khairul and also our coach, Halim, we decided, why the heck not? We’ve also heard stories of other female teams who were really good but have since disbanded due to personal reasons. If they can do it, why not us? Plus, we each wanted something different to do outside work/school. Since then, it’s been GAME ON for us.
Some women would have the impression that girls that play paintball are all tomboys and tough girls. Does that describe the girls in your team?
Behind our feminine gorgeousness, we are one tough, fierce bunch of girls. :)
So do you think it takes a certain type of girl to take up paintball considering the amount of testosterone, mud, sweat and the odd bruise that comes with paintball?
Girls who want to play paintball need to be prepared for mud, blood, sweat and tears. We have to train and play come rain or shine and if one is not ready for such elements, then do not bother. We have to work even harder to be on par, if not better than our male counterparts. But that doesn’t mean that we have to be tomboys!! We still have girly talks off the field and are particular with how we look in our gear! Gotta look fly! ;)
What sort of qualities do you think make for a good female paintballer or any paintballer for that matter?
The most important quality to have would be to keep calm even though one is under pressure. It has happened to Xtreme Estrogen – we felt pressured in a few of our games and we made unnecessary mistakes. The best paintballers out there play with calmness and are able to think quick whilst in the game.
You could have formed a mixed sex team, why did you decide on forming an all girls team?
It was the vision of both our manager and coach to have an all girls team. The more we thought about it, the more we said, “Yeah, we can do this! Just us girls, we can do it.” We also had to be smart - being an all girls team has its uniqueness and with that we hope to be marketable. To be walking billboards for girls to join the sport.
So you have enough girls to form a team, what was the next step for all of you?
We just have enough players for a team. We could always do with more. Number one priority is to expand the team roster and later on build a club to promote paintball to girls.
Xtreme Estrogen have just played their debut tournament in Division 4 of MY-NPL. How did the team go?
Xtreme Estrogen had actually taken part in the Johor Paintball Open last December and we were a hot mess. This time round, at MY-NPL, we managed to play a lot better as a team. Although we missed out on the sweet sixteen round, we communicated and played better, and we sure did not make it easy for our opponents. 3 losses out of 8 games - not bad for a newbie team, who had 2 brand new players, just join only a week before. The experience obtained at PJ will certainly make us better players and we can’t wait for MY-NPL Event 2 in Melaka.

So were there some wins in amongst that or did you hold the other 5 games to draws? Where do you think you can improve your team game based on your MY-NPL experience?
We had 2 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses. Even though we improved in our communication since the Johor Paintball Open, it is still a weak point for us. Us girls need to scream more and definitely louder when in the field. We also need to learn how the different roles are played.
Do you think some of the predominately male teams go into matches against you thinking they will get an easy win?
There could be but we have been lucky to have had some opponents who do take us seriously and really make us work for that 5 mins in the field.
What do you think are the advantages women have over men playing tournament paintball? Are there any disadvantages?
As females, it can’t be denied that we do get the attention from the guys at the tournament. But we use that to our advantage by asking for tips and advices on how we should play and improve our games. We have been blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from some of the best such as Kamal from No Mercy, Halim, formerly from Ironsea and many more. We are also pressured to prove to everyone that we can belong in the same league as the guys. However at the end of the day, we are there to have fun and just play paintball. :)
You're all from Singapore. Do you train in Singapore or Malaysia?
We do our fitness training in Singapore every week but go to JB to train on the field. Our coach, Halim, is Malaysian, hence we go across the causeway to have him train us.
How often do you train a month?
We do fitness training in Singapore once a week and we try to go down to the field twice a month.
Do you plan on playing local tournaments in Singapore?
We would like to concentrate on MY-NPL this year. Hopefully in the near future, when finances permit, we will give the local tournaments here in Singapore, a go.
What are the goals for Xtreme Estrogen in 2010?
1. We would like a podium finish at MY-NPL, preferably more than once. :)
2. We would like to recruit more girls into the team. Could always use more players!
3. Start the “girls for paintball” movement. To come and play and have fun!
